Flower Crafts for Kids - Project 2 - Crepe Paper Roses

Crepe Paper Roses

You will need:
  • Green paper modelling straws or plastic drinking straws (for stems)
  • Red and green crepe paper (or colours of your choice)
  • Sticky tape
  • Scissors

Here's how to make these cheerful, long-lasting flowers:

  1. Draw a petal template as shown below:
  2. Rose Petal Diagram

  3. Take a strip of red crepe paper approximately 63cm long and 10cm high and fold into a concertina of 9 rectangular sections approximately 7cm x 10cm.
  4. Place the petal template into the centre of the concertina and cut right around the template to make 9 separate petals.
  5. Stretch each of the petals slightly at the centres using your thumbs to give the petals a bit of shape but take care not to tear the paper.
  6. Take a straw and attach the first petal around one end with sticky tape. Keep this first petal almost closed to make the centre of the rose.
  7. Now add a second petal to the stem, slightly more open than the first. Secure with sticky tape.
  8. Continue working round the straw stem adding one petal at a time to build up the rose in layers. About 9 petals should be enough for a reasonably-sized rose but you may wish to add a couple more.
  9. When you are happy with the size of your rose, cut a strip of green crepe paper approximately 2.5cm x 8cm and cut the edge as shown:

  11. Attach this piece around the base of the flower head to finish off.
  12. Repeat to make as many roses as you wish.
