Flower Crafts for Kids - Project 1 - Basket of Flowers

Basket of Flowers

You will need:
  • Thin white and pink card (or colours of your choice)
  • Pencil, ruler, scissors and glue or double-sided adhesive tape
  • Foam or paper flower and heart shapes (you can use the templates in the PDF File)
  • Green paper modelling straws
  • Green crepe or tissue paper

To make the basket:

  1. Draw the template below onto thin white card.
  2. Cut out around the outside lines, cut along the four dotted lines, then score and fold along the solid lines.
  3. Glue the four square corner tabs you have created to the inside of the side sections to form a simple rectangular box as the base for your basket.
  4. Basket of Flowers Template

  5. Cut a strip of white card 21cm x 2.5cm for the handle and another strip of pink card 21cm x 2cm. Stick the pink strip centrally on top of the white strip. Glue the ends of the handle to the inside of the basket at the middle of each of the shorter sides.
  6. Decorate the handle with 2 small foam or paper hearts.
  7. Cover the outside of the basket with woven paper pieces to create the basket effect. Make these sections as follows:
  • Cut 6 strips of pink card measuring 11cm x 1cm and 6 strips of pink card measuring 9cm x 1cm.
  • Cut 40 strips of white card measuring 3cm x 1cm.
  • Lay out 11 of the small white strips vertically side by side.
  • Weave one of the 11cm pink strips between the white strips at right angles and use glue or double-sided adhesive tape to secure the white strips to the pink strip along the bottom of the white strips.
  • Weave a second 11cm pink strip so that it sits tightly on top of the first and so that pink squares always appear next to white squares to achieve a basket-weave effect. Secure all the ends.
  • Repeat with a third 11cm pink strip and secure all the white strips to the third pink strip.
  • Trim off any excess length or height and stick this first woven panel to one of the longer sides of the basket.
  • Repeat for the opposite side and then use the 9cm pink strips to make covers for the two shorter sides of the basket in the same way.

To make the flowers to fill your basket:

  1. Cut green straws to make flower stems of the length you require. Flatten one end of the stem and glue to the back of a foam or paper flower. Add a circular centre to the flower if required.
  2. Flatten the other end of the stem and fold at right angles to enable you to glue the stem to the inside base of the basket.
  3. Repeat with the other flowers to fill your basket.
  4. Fill in around your flower stems with pieces of crumpled green crepe or tissue paper. This will help to support the stems as well as cover the base of the basket.
